The 25th of December, 2024 marks that memorable day when Rajasthan held a function in the fond memory of Maharaja Suraj Mal, one of the greatest rulers of the Jat dynasty. Suraj Mal, as per Maratha and Mughal history played an important part in many wars, his kingdom survived many wars, even at one point, he was one of the strongest and richest rulers in Jat history.
However, he is best known for his military campaigns, especially during the Battle of Delhi (1754) in which he cooperated with the Marathas to protect the city from the Mughals.
As much as he had a direct mind for war, Suraj Mal was also a progressive ruler who supported development in agriculture and cared for the welfare of his people. His patronage of art, culture and architecture is enormous as there are so many architectural wonders that bear testimony of his reign.
The sacrifice of Maharaja Suraj Mal especially during the last phase of his reign was epitomized in his efforts to protect his people and the land from the outside threat. His death in the year1763 during a battle while leading his men is a good example of bravery and sacrifice for the Jat community. The people of Rajasthan observe Shaheed Diwas in remembrance and appreciation of his courage and his ability to lead as well as the enormous contributions he made towards the wellbeing of his kingdom.
The Unveiling of the statue of Maharaja Suraj Mal is self an event which is very important. The participation of the people of Rajasthan in the observance of Sardar Maharaja Suraj Mals sacrifice and the inauguration of the statue of the same king is of profound cultural and historical significance for the people of that state.
